Some 250 guests attended a reception hosted by the High Commission of Malaysia in Bandar Seri Begawan to mark Malaysia’s 69th National Day and Malaysia Day 2026 on Wednesday evening.
The reception at the Royal Berkshire Hall, Tarindak D’Polo Jerudong, brought together dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, Legislative Council members, senior government officials, academics, business leaders and representatives of the Malaysian community.
Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office (Security and Law) Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, representing the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, attended as guest of honour with his spouse.
The reception began with the national anthems of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia, followed by welcoming remarks from High Commissioner of Malaysia Datuk Mohd Aini Atan.
In his address, Datuk Mohd Aini highlighted the longstanding ties between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, describing the relationship as being founded on friendship, shared values and a common aspiration for the prosperity of both peoples.
He also highlighted cooperation between the two countries in areas including the economy, defence, tourism and education.
On regional matters, Datuk Mohd Aini reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to promoting mutual confidence and dialogue through diplomacy and goodwill amid evolving regional dynamics.
The reception also featured the presentation of mementos to the guest of honour and his spouse, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony.
Guests were entertained by live music and Malaysian cultural dance performances, while a selection of Malaysian cuisine was served.
A one-metre batik painting was also displayed, highlighting an initiative by the High Commission and the Ladies’ Association of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia (PERWAKILAN), Bandar Seri Begawan, to showcase the uniqueness and intricate artistry of Malaysian batik.
