Brunei, historically known as Boni in ancient Chinese documents, has long served as a vital maritime hub on the ancient Maritime Silk Road. For thousands of years, the tranquil ocean routes linking China and Brunei have sustained prosperous commercial trade, frequent diplomatic interactions and profound people-to-people exchanges across Southeast Asian waters. The abundant maritime cultural heritage preserved from these long-standing bilateral communications serve as authentic, tangible and irrefutable evidence of the two nations’ time-honoured friendship. It also offers a profound and credible entry point for contemporary cultural dialogue, diversified civilisational communication and mutually beneficial cultural mutual learning between China and Brunei.
The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum preserves the most iconic and well-documented relics that witness the prosperous ancient exchanges between China and Brunei. In 1997, a complete and well-preserved ancient merchant shipwreck was accidentally discovered during routine offshore energy exploration in Brunei territorial waters. The large-scale salvage operation successfully recovered more than 10,000 precious cultural artefacts, the majority of which are exquisite Chinese porcelain wares of different dynasties, accompanied by delicate traditional Chinese glass ornaments and fine metal crafts. Professional archaeological research precisely dates the shipwreck to the late 15th to early 16th Century, a pivotal golden period for booming maritime trade and cross-border cultural integration between China and Southeast Asia. Loaded with high-quality Chinese commodities, the ancient vessel sailed steadily along the classic Maritime Silk Road route, fully reflecting the vibrant economic trade and inclusive cultural interactions between the two regions in ancient times. After centuries of silent underwater preservation and historical precipitation, these precious underwater relics have become unique and irreplaceable cultural symbols of long-term China-Brunei friendly exchanges.
Cultural heritage represents the shared spiritual treasure of all humanity, and its scientific protection, orderly inheritance and innovative development constitute the common responsibility and lofty mission of all countries worldwide. Both China and Brunei have always upheld rigorous and professional standards in cultural heritage conservation and traditional cultural inheritance. Guided by the local Melayu Islam Beraja governance philosophy, Brunei has systematically protected and inherited its distinctive local cultural legacies, including the world-famous Kampong Ayer water settlement, the historic Kota Batu Archaeological Park, and the sophisticated traditional keris forging craftsmanship, gradually forming a complete, standardised and systematic national heritage preservation and display system.
Strictly abiding by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, China has long prioritised the comprehensive protection of maritime cultural heritage, underwater cultural relics and diverse intangible cultural heritage, accumulating mature and practical experience in professional underwater archaeology, sophisticated cultural relic restoration, standardised digital archiving and dynamic living heritage inheritance.
The shared maritime historical memories and profound cultural roots have laid a solid foundation for continuous in-depth cultural cooperation between China and Brunei. The year 2026 marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of official diplomatic relations between China and Brunei, as well as the 15th anniversary of sister-city friendly ties between Nanjing City and Bandar Seri Begawan. To commemorate the fruitful bilateral cultural exchanges and profound traditional friendship, the symbolic cultural sculpture Dream Vessel was officially unveiled at the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum. Designed based on the classic structure of ancient Chinese ocean-going junks, the artistic sculpture perfectly complements the ancient shipwreck relics on permanent exhibition, serving as a brand-new cultural landmark that inherits the glorious history of the Maritime Silk Road and witnesses sincere bilateral civilisational mutual learning. In recent years, the two sides have continuously deepened pragmatic cultural cooperation through diversified forms including special heritage exhibitions, on-site intangible heritage demonstrations and youth cultural exchange workshops.
Outstanding Chinese heritage practitioners have visited Brunei repeatedly to share authentic traditional craftsmanship, while Bruneian scholars and young students have conducted in-depth field studies on China’s advanced heritage protection and inheritance practices, jointly building a solid and stable bridge for two-way cultural communication and mutual learning.
All civilisations in the world thrive through constant mutual learning and inclusive dialogue. Cross-border cultural heritage cooperation embodies the most sincere, fundamental and enduring people-to-people connectivity between countries.
Adhering to the principles of equality, mutual respect, openness and win-win cooperation, China is ready to further share its mature practical experience in heritage protection, modern digital preservation and standardised museum management with Brunei.
