Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Dato Seri Setia Awang Mohammed Riza bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohammed Yunos led a Brunei Darussalam delegation to the 12th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transportation Ministers’ Meeting (TMM12) in Beijing, China on September 22, 2026.
Brunei’s participation in the meeting provided a platform to exchange views and experiences, as well as to explore opportunities for cooperation with APEC member economies, particularly in the areas of connectivity, safety, digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI).
Such cooperation has the potential to enhance regional transport connectivity and facilitate trade, tourism and the movement of people, while enabling Brunei Darussalam to leverage appropriate technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and delivery of transport services towards a more integrated and future-ready national transport system.
Themed ‘Collaboration and Innovation: Shaping a Better Future for Transportation in the Asia-Pacific Region’, the meeting focused on strengthening transport connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region and promoting the use of digital technologies and AI towards developing safer, more efficient and resilient transport systems. Discussions also highlighted the importance of enhancing interoperability, including in the areas of standards, data flows, algorithm security and privacy protection, to support the adoption of emerging technologies in the transport sector.
TMM12 also produced a joint statement which, among other things, encouraged efforts to strengthen practical cooperation in the transport sector towards building an open, dynamic, resilient and peaceful Asia-Pacific community by 2040, in line with the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040.
The joint statement recognised the increasing role of AI in transportation and encouraged member economies to accelerate innovation in a secure manner, including in autonomous transportation, and to harness the benefits of technology for the transport sector.
Chaired by Minister of Transport of China Liu Wei, the meeting served as a ministerial-level forum for APEC member economies to discuss strategic directions and strengthen cooperation in the transport sector. It was attended by transport ministers and representatives from APEC member economies.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications Suhara Fadzali bin Haji Yusop was also in attendance.
