The Ministry of Health (MoH), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, commenced a Basic Mental Health Training Course for community leaders, comprising Mukim Penghulus and Village Heads.
The course, which began on September 14 and expected to conclude by the end of November, has 20 participants comprising Mukim Penghulus and Village Heads under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The course forms part of efforts, to uphold the titah delivered by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, concerning issues related to mental health. The training is also among the key actions outlined under the National Mental Health Action Plan 2022–2025, specifically Strategy 3, which focuses on strengthening mental health promotion and mental disorder prevention.
The training began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by welcoming remarks from Clinical Psychologist and Head of the Mental Health Strategy at the Health Promotion Centre Nor Syahmun binti Haji Awang Matassan.
Throughout the course, participants will receive knowledge on mental health and psychology from both Islamic and medical perspectives.
They will also be introduced to counselling techniques, psychological approaches, as well as holistic and integrated treatment methods.
As part of the programme, participants will attend knowledge-sharing sessions.
The course is also supported by the Counselling and Religious Understanding Unit of the Department of Syariah Affairs and the Islamic Da’wah Centre under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The training aims to enhance awareness of the importance of maintaining emotional and mental well-being from an Islamic perspective, while reducing stigma and negative perceptions surrounding mental health within the community.
