Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in Brunei Darussalam, with over 400 new cases recorded each year. From 2020 to 2024, stroke registration at the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre, BNSRC of Jerudong Park Medical Centre, JPMC showed that approximately 450 cases of stroke due to blocked blood vessel, and between 103 to 155 cases of stroke due to ruptured blood vessel were reported each year. The majority of patients comprised of men and 70 per cent of them have a history of hypertension. This was stated by the Minister of Health in a message in conjunction with the World Stroke Day celebration.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar stated that the national health survey, STEPS 2015–2016 revealed that 35.8 per cent of Bruneian adults aged between 18 to 69 have hypertension, and nearly half of the adult population have high cholesterol, and 62.8 per cent are obese. Dietary habits also contribute to stroke risk.

To reduce this disease, the Ministry of Health intensified efforts to promote health and early screenings through health screening programmes and healthy lifestyle campaigns. The Ministry of Health in partnership with BNSRC and JPMC also continue to enhance prevention, treatment and rehabilitation strategies for stroke patients to improve their quality of life. The World Stroke Day is celebrated every 29th of October to raise awareness on the causes, signs and prevention of stroke. This year's theme was Every Minute Counts.
