Referring to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah at the 35th Teacher’s Day celebration, Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh outlined several measures undertaken by the Ministry of Education (MoE), in her Sembah Alu-Aluan during the 36th Teacher’s Day celebration yesterday.
The MoE continues to strengthen innovation, sustainability and preparedness across the education system, with efforts ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) training for teachers to enhancing early childhood education and digital literacy.
These measures were in response to His Majesty’s guidance on the use of AI in teaching and learning, the role of the Brunei Darussalam National Examinations Board and strengthening early childhood education.
On AI, the ministry has strengthened teachers’ capabilities through ethical AI training under professional development programmes. A total of 4,281 teachers have completed the AI Teacher Certification and obtained the AI In-depth Literacy Certification, while 772 teachers, including 22 teachers from the Department of Islamic Studies, attended the AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit (AIGST) workshop.
On the role of the Brunei Darussalam Examinations Board (LPB), the minister said the board is working towards conducting examinations and certification for Malay Language, Malay Literature and Islamic Religious Knowledge at the upper secondary and pre-university levels from 2028, with qualifications equivalent to GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels.
On strengthening the quality of early childhood education, the minister said the MoE, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Ministry of Health have begun developing a National Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education for children aged zero to five.
The integrated framework will focus on early care and education, health and nutrition, family protection, as well as the values of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB). Innovation has also been expanded across all levels of education.
At the Technical and Vocational Education and Training level, young people’s capabilities continue to be strengthened through skills competitions aimed at recognising excellence and developing talent capable of competing internationally.
Meanwhile, higher education institutions are playing a key role in sustainable development through high-impact research, including in food security; the provision of green technology infrastructure serving as living laboratories; and the development of integrated sustainability master plans.
At the core education level, the MoE introduced the School Innovation Award in November 2025 to foster a culture of creativity and strengthen school self-assessment.
To ensure the culture of innovation is supported by capabilities relevant to future demands, particular emphasis has also been placed on digital skills, including Computational Thinking and AI.
The MoE has developed the Brunei Darussalam Digital Literacy Standards (BDDLS) and updated the ICT curriculum. The measures support the objectives of the Ministry of Education’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027 and are complemented by the ministry’s Digital Citizenship Framework.
Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah also highlighted efforts to enhance education quality across all levels and in both government and private educational institutions.
The Standard Operating Procedures for Private Educational Institutions (SOP-IPS) were updated and came into force in January 2026.
The procedures cover school, teacher and fee registration, as well as new areas including building approval, external activities, teacher placement and continuous monitoring.
The minister extended her congratulations and commendation to the recipients of the 36th Teacher’s Day Awards, while expressing appreciation and gratitude to teachers throughout Brunei Darussalam.
She said teachers’ services and dedication would continue to be remembered and appreciated as the driving force behind sustainable and innovative education.
