Munajat Night explores Islamic approach to well-being

Anxiety, emotional distress, psychological pressure and inner conflict are part of the human experience, and Al-Quran provides guidance on how to face and manage these challenges, said religious teacher at Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Religious School in Mumong, Belait District Nordin bin Ajmain.

This insight was shared in his religious talk ‘Islamic Approaches to Enhancing Muslim Health and Well-being’, delivered during the 251st edition of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ (MoRA) Munajat Night programme on Saturday.

Broadcast from the Kampong Pandan National Housing Scheme Mosque in Belait District, the talk highlighted the importance of understanding mental and emotional well-being from both spiritual and psychological perspectives.

He noted that scholars such as Abu Zayd al-Balkhi emphasised that human health encompasses both physical and psychological well-being, which are inseparable.

Islam teaches individuals to manage their inner state through remembrance of Allah the Almighty, understanding the nafs (self or soul), and viewing emotional experiences as opportunities for self-understanding and returning to Allah the Almighty.

Nordin stressed that people experiencing anxiety should not immediately be labelled as having weak faith.

Instead, he encouraged others to ask what the person might be going through and how they could offer support.

He highlighted the importance of self-reflection, patience, prayer, zikir (remembrance of Allah the Almighty), Al-Quran recitation and supplication, alongside proper sleep, nutrition, social relationships and professional assistance when necessary.

He concluded that mental well-being should neither be viewed solely as a matter of weak faith nor treated exclusively as a psychological issue, as caring for one’s mental and spiritual health is also a responsibility entrusted by Allah the Almighty.

This week’s Munajat Night programme was joined by mosque committee members, youth and congregants from Kampong Pandan National Housing Scheme Mosque in Belait District, members of the Brunei-Muara District Converts Association, as well as participants from mosques and prayer halls.

Staff of the MoRA also took part, alongside the public who joined the programme virtually from their homes. The programme began with the recitation of Sayyidul Istighfar and Surah Al-Fatihah, led by penghulu of Mukim Kuala Belait Haji Abdul Afiq bin Zainuddin from Kampong Pandan National Housing Scheme Mosque.

This was followed by mass recitation of Surah Al-Mulk, led by Acting Village Head of Kampong Pekan Kuala Belait ‘A’ Haji Muhammad Ammar Muazzam bin Haji Matusof.

The Doa Munajat was recited by Religious Affairs Officer and Imam of Kampong Pandan National Housing Scheme Mosque, Department of Mosque Affairs, MoRA Abdul Qayyuum bin Haji Aminnuddin.

A prayer seeking rainfall amid the haze was delivered by Imam Level III Abdul Azim bin Haji Abdul Adzid from the same mosque.

Following the religious talk, participants recited Asmaul Husna collectively, led by youth from Kampong Pandan National Housing Scheme Mosque Muhammad Nur Adiib bin Awang Haji Luqman.

The programme concluded with Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam, recited by Pengiran Haji Mohammad Khairol Norlizam bin Pengiran Haji Rosli, an education officer and religious teacher at Perdana Wazir Secondary School in Belait District.

Munajat Night aims to encourage Muslims to strengthen their relationship with Allah the Almighty through spiritual practices, seek forgiveness, recite and reflect on the holy verses of Al-Quran, and join together in raising and affirming prayers.

The programme also provides an opportunity for the community to pray for the continued protection of Brunei Darussalam, its people and residents from calamities and infectious diseases.
