Nearly 157kg of rubbish removed from Serasa Beach

Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah (MD) organised a beach clean-up activity at Serasa Beach on October 10, 2026, as part of its efforts to promote environmental awareness, sustainability and social responsibility among students.

The initiative, organised by the Green School Initiative Programme under the Geography Department and the EcoGreen Club, was held in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development. A total of 47 students and seven teachers participated in the activity, collectively collecting 156.51 kilogrammes of rubbish from the beach.

The achievement highlighted the importance of collective action in maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces and protecting Brunei Darussalam’s coastal environment.

The beach clean-up aimed to instil a greater sense of environmental responsibility among students while encouraging them to take an active role in preserving the cleanliness and natural beauty of the country’s coastal areas.

Through this hands-on experience, participants gained a deeper appreciation of the impact of littering and the importance of responsible waste management.

Beyond environmental conservation, the initiative also sought to promote students’ physical well-being, teamwork, self-reliance and social cohesion.

By engaging in an outdoor community activity, students had the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills, strengthen relationships and cultivate a sense of shared responsibility.

The programme also supports the college’s Green School initiatives and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land, which emphasise the importance of protecting natural ecosystems and promoting environmental sustainability.

Through initiatives such as this, MD remains committed to nurturing environmentally conscious and socially responsible students who recognise their role in contributing to a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future.
