New Bukit Panggal power station project to raise generation efficiency

The Department of Electrical Services (DES) on Thursday signed a contract with Sinohydro Corporation Limited to develop Phase 2 of the Bukit Panggal Combined Cycle Gas Turbines Power Station, a project expected to boost Brunei’s electricity generation capacity by 215 megawatts (MW) when completed in 2029.

The project, under the 12th National Development Plan (RKN12), will raise the country’s power generation efficiency to at least 50 per cent from the current average of below 30 per cent, while strengthening the reliability and resilience of the national electricity supply.

The contract signing ceremony was held at the Banquet Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office.

In his welcoming remarks, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira bin Pengiran Haji Petra described the project as a strategic investment to strengthen the country’s power generation capacity and meet rising electricity demand.

He said the additional 215MW of installed capacity would account for about one-third of Brunei’s total peak electricity demand and enable the power station to achieve a generation efficiency of 51.6 per cent.

He added that the project would enhance reserve capacity, improve grid stability and operational reliability, while optimising fuel use.

The new power station will feature dual-fuel capability, allowing it to operate on both natural gas and diesel to provide greater operational flexibility and improve the security of electricity supply.

Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira said the project would also create opportunities for local employment, knowledge transfer, capacity building and the development of expertise within the energy sector.

He noted that the continued development of Brunei’s power infrastructure is essential to support industrial growth, digital transformation and economic diversification in line with Wawasan Brunei 2035.

The Bukit Panggal Combined Cycle Gas Turbines Power Station Phase 2 project is expected to play a key role in strengthening the nation’s energy infrastructure, supporting sustainable socio-economic development and ensuring a stable, reliable and efficient electricity supply for the country.
