Fifty participants, comprising new converts from across the rural areas of the Belait District, joined the second edition of the Muallaf Guidance Programme at the Balai Ibadat Kampong Merangking recently, focusing on Al-Quran proficiency.
Programme chairman Awangku Abdul Qayum bin Pengiran Bakar hoped that the initiative would strengthen the participants’ confidence and motivation in Al-Quran recitation, while encouraging them to develop a greater interest in understanding the Arabic language.
He added that participants should be encouraged to understand Al-Quran beyond its translated meaning through interactive Arabic language learning.
The participants focused on strengthening their recitation of Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, while also improving their Al-Quran recitation, particularly the correct articulation of makhraj, the application of tajwid and fluency.
The participants were also introduced to the virtues of each surah, while interactive Arabic language learning methods were incorporated to enhance their understanding of Al-Quran.
The programme also included a research survey by a team of researchers from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), in support of a study on ‘The Application of Interactive Arabic Language Learning as a Bridge to Early Quranic Understanding Among Muallaf in Brunei Darussalam’.
The research, led by Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Abdul Karim from the university’s Faculty of Arabic Language, aims to assess the participants’ level of understanding of the material delivered throughout the sessions.

Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann, Village Head of Kampong Merangking Nurulizam bin Haji Abdul Rahman, and co-researcher from UNISSA’s Faculty of Arabic Language Dr Zulamali @ Abdul Aziz bin Begawan Mudim Pehin Khatib Dato Paduka Haji Matassan were also present. – Daniel Lim
