Following recent reports of Nipah virus infection detected in India, no such cases have been reported in Brunei Darussalam to date. This was stated by the Ministry of Health in a press release on the current situation of the Nipah virus infection in Brunei Darussalam.
Based on the WHO risk assessment, the current risk of infection in Brunei Darussalam is low given there is no evidence of sustained transmission in all affected countries at present. Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through infected animals such as fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family as well as pigs. Infection can occur through consumption of food, such as fruits, that have been contaminated by bodily fluids from these animals. Transmission can also occur through close contact with infected individuals.
As a primary preventive measure, the public is advised to adopt the following precautions: avoid consuming potentially contaminated fruits including raw date palm sap; avoid contact with sick animals; and refrain from direct contact with infected individuals or their bodily fluids. In addition, the public is encouraged to maintain high personal hygiene standards. This includes washing hands frequently, or using hand sanitiser; practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette, and wear a face mask if having symptoms of respiratory infection especially when in closed or crowded places. Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick, unwell or showing signs of illness such as fever, cough or shortness of breath; seek immediate medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen; and continuously practice a healthy lifestyle.
Travelers who are visiting areas affected by Nipah virus are advised to remain vigilant, follow the health precautions outlined above, and inform healthcare personnel of their travel history if seeking medical care. The Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the situation in Brunei Darussalam and following developments at the regional and global levels. Steps are also being taken to ensure continued preparedness in providing healthcare services. The Ministry of Health will update the public from time to time about any latest developments on the infections.
