Nusantara Syariah judicial conference focuses on AI, future of justice

Nearly 200 judges, legal practitioners and officials from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore are taking part in the fourth Nusantara Syariah Judicial and Legal Conference 2026, which opened in Gadong on Tuesday.

The conference carries the theme Syariah Judiciary in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Challenges, Ethics and the Future Direction of Syariah Justice.

The conference was officiated by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office (Security and Law) Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu.

Chief Syarie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Salim bin Haji Besar said the conference provides a platform for practitioners from the four countries to share experiences and collectively address issues concerning Syariah law and judicial administration.

He said discussions will examine how AI can improve the efficiency of Syariah judicial administration and case management, while addressing ethical challenges arising from its use.

The conference will also cover AI governance, data integrity, cybersecurity, protection of judicial information and the need for regulatory frameworks that balance technological innovation with Maqasid Syariah and principles of justice.

The Chief Syarie Judge stressed that regardless of how advanced AI becomes, it remains a tool created by humans and cannot replace human wisdom and accountability in judicial decision-making.

Four presentations by speakers from Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore will explore the challenges, ethics and future direction of Syariah justice in the Nusantara region.

The conference is being hosted by Brunei for the first time, following three editions previously held in Malaysia.

A meeting of the 2026 Syariah Legal and Judicial Secretariat will also be held following the conference, bringing together the Chief Syarie Judges of the four participating countries to discuss matters of common interest and strengthen regional cooperation in Syariah law and justice.
