One offence under the Weights and Measures Act, Chapter 151 was uncovered during a joint operation by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) through the Department of Consumer Affairs, in collaboration with the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), at business premises in Bandar Seri Begawan in July 2026.
During the joint operation, the SDT Unit inspected seven units of weighing machines used for commercial trading purposes.
Two units were found to be non-compliant with the Weights and Measures Act, Chapter 151 and the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994 Chapter 3 (1) and (2), specifically for operating weighing machines with expired registration periods.
The company was issued a Seizure Notice, resulting in the confiscation of both machines.
The company is required to report to the SDT Unit Office within seven working days from the date of the notice.
Owners of weighing machines who have renewed their Annual Registration and completed New Registration procedures may have the equipment returned for trading purposes.
Meanwhile, JPES confirmed that the inspected business premises complied with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and its regulations.
Price-controlled goods, including cooking oil and formulated powdered milk, were sold within prescribed maximum prices, and prices were displayed clearly and accurately throughout the premises.
The monthly joint operations by JPES and the SDT Unit aim to uphold ethical business conduct by ensuring adherence to both the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and the Weights and Measures Act, Chapter 151, strengthening consumer confidence and promoting healthy competition within the market.
Businesses are reminded to adhere to the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 by ensuring price-controlled items do not exceed maximum price caps and that all price tags are clearly displayed. Traders must also comply with the Weights and Measures Act, Chapter 151 by ensuring all measuring and weighing instruments used in commercial activities maintain valid registration with the SDT Unit.
