The National Pencak Silat Championship, held in conjunction with the 80th Birthday Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, officially kick started yesterday following the official opening ceremony at the Indoor Stadium, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Acting Deputy Director of Youth and Sports Department at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Haswandi bin Haji Osman, the guest of honour, representing Permanent Secretary at the MCYS Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman. Acting President of the Brunei Darussalam National Pencak Silat Federation Haji Abdul Rajak bin Haji Dali and officials from the federation were also present.

The ceremony continued with the reading of the Pencak Silat athletes’ oath, led by Nur Asyifa Shabeqah binti Masli, a Class ‘B’ Tanding athlete and bronze medallist at the recent SUKMA Selangor. The Referees and Judges’ oath was led by Muhammad Adam bin Haji Emran.

This year’s championship has attracted 147 participants representing seven contingents namely Brunei-Muara District, Belait District, Tutong District, Temburong District, Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council, Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council, and the Brunei Darussalam Schools Sports Council.

The participants will compete in five disciplines – Cakak Asli Brunei, Kuntau Melayu, Tanding, Seni Antarabangsa and Seni Festival.

The championship opened with a demonstration by Pengiran Ali bin Pengiran Haji Apong, followed by the quarter-finals of the Cakak Asli Brunei and Kuntau Melayu events. Participants in both disciplines are competing for the personal shield of His Majesty.

The championship not only provides a platform for silat athletes to test and showcase their skills and abilities at the national level, but also plays an important role in promoting Pencak Silat as part of Brunei Darussalam’s cultural heritage and sporting tradition, with its distinctive traditional values and identity.

The event also serves as a platform to strengthen sportsmanship, discipline, unity and camaraderie among athletes and officials from the seven participating contingents.
