Pig bristles detected in brush products sold at business premises

The Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), through the Department of Syariah Affairs, informed the public that Mont Marte stencil and paint brushes sold at business premises in the country have been confirmed to be made from pig bristles.

Following a complaint regarding the sale of the brushes, which were suspected to contain pig bristles, the Halal Food Control Division referred the items to the Scientific Services Department, Ministry of Health, for analysis. The analysis confirmed that the brushes were made from pig bristles.

In view of the findings and to safeguard the interests of the Muslim community, the Department of Syariah Affairs has instructed the business owner to immediately separate the affected brushes from other products.

The brushes may only be sold in a designated non-halal section or area and must not be displayed in a manner that exposes them to the public.

Business owners, operators, traders, suppliers and importers are reminded to exercise greater caution and vigilance when dealing with imported products and consumer goods intended for public sale. This is to ensure that products being sold are pure and clean and are not mixed with materials deemed non-halal, thereby safeguarding the Muslim community from purchasing or using non-halal products and consumer goods.

The ministry also stressed that all food operators in the country must not use equipment, utensils or consumer goods made from non-halal materials, including pig-bristle brushes, in the preparation, processing, handling or serving of food intended for the public, particularly Muslims.

Any violation may affect halal compliance and could result in legal action.

The public is reminded to remain vigilant and report any information regarding non-halal products being openly sold at business premises by contacting the Department of Syariah Affairs through the Halal Food Control Division hotline or any Halal Food Control Division office nationwide.
