The Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), through the Syariah Affairs Department, has raised concerns over the halal status of two Korean food products sold in Brunei Darussalam after receiving public complaints.
The Halal Food Control Division said the products involved are Delief Kimchi Base Sauce, manufactured by Samjinfoods Inc and Delief Gochujang Red Pepper Paste (Koreanische Chilipaste) 170g, manufactured by Sajo Industries Co Ltd.
Investigations found that both products contain an ingredient identified as “alcohol”, the source of which could not be verified.
The department also found that neither product has halal certification recognised by any authorised halal certification body.
To safeguard the Muslim community, the Syariah Affairs Department instructed supermarkets, grocery stores and other retailers selling the two Delief products to immediately separate them and display them only in areas not openly accessible to the public.
The ministry also reminded business owners, managers, importers, suppliers, distributors and retailers to exercise greater vigilance in handling non-halal products throughout the supply chain, including during importation, storage, transportation, internal handling and retail display.
It stressed that non-halal products must be completely segregated from halal products to prevent cross-contamination and avoid confusion among consumers, particularly Muslims. – Lyna Mohamad
