Rain on Friday afternoon brought welcome relief from hazy conditions that have affected parts of the country in recent days, with air quality readings remaining at moderate to unhealthy levels across the four districts.
As of 4pm on Friday, Belait recorded the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading at 99, followed by Brunei-Muara at 90, Tutong at 89 and Temburong at 81.
All four readings were within the moderate air quality range.
The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development, has enhanced air quality reporting by incorporating fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations into the PSI, effective from 2pm on September 1.
PM2.5 refers to fine suspended particles measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter. Due to their small size, these particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
JASTRe will continue monitoring air quality nationwide and issue PSI updates five times daily during the hazy period at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.
A PSI reading of 50 and below indicates good air quality, while readings of 51-100 are classified as moderate. Readings of 101-200 are considered unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous.
