Refreshed debit cards showcase Brunei heritage, identity

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD) rolled out a new, refreshed debit card collection that celebrates Brunei’s rich heritage, cultural identity, and Islamic values, marking one of the bank’s most significant card launches to date.

The new collection introduces three distinctive cards with enhanced security features, including the BIBD Platinum Debit Mastercard, the refreshed BIBD Flex Platinum Debit Mastercard for younger customers, and the BIBD Eco Limited-Edition Platinum Debit Mastercard. The new collection represents a tribute to Bruneian identity. Every design draws inspiration from the nation’s heritage and values, transforming these defining elements into something customers can carry with them every day.

Details of the cards were shared during a press conference yesterday chaired by Head of Marketing Ahmad Firdaus bin PD Haji Salim, Marketing Business Partner Zahirul Ghazi bin Jomari, Marketing Business Partner Haji Amir Anwar bin PDP Haji Abd Rahman, Deputy Head of Product Engineering Sabrina Wong, and Product Manager Siti Aishah binti Haji Abu Bakar.

“The new BIBD Platinum Debit Mastercard will serve as a replacement for the current BIBD Debit Card, while the refreshed BIBD Flex Platinum Debit Mastercard is designed specifically for customers aged 15 to 17,” said Ahmad Firdaus.

He shared, “The introduction of the new cards also coincides with our local heritage, which is the launch of the BIBD Yayasan branch. The background of the new BIBD Platinum Debit Mastercard features the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Bridge, while the BIBD Flex Platinum Debit Mastercard showcases the water village, and the BIBD Eco Limited-Edition Platinum Debit Mastercard features a design of the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque Mosque. The collection was brought to life through collaborations with local Bruneian artists, ensuring that each design reflects authentic, homegrown creativity rather than conventional banking aesthetics. The partnership also reinforces BIBD’s continued commitment to empowering local talent and providing a platform for Bruneian artistry to flourish.”

Touching on the new security features, Siti Aishah said, “Customer security and the protection of card details remain a top priority for us. The most visible change in the new design is that card details have been moved to the back of the card, giving it a cleaner, more contemporary look on the front. This placement is intended to enhance security by minimising exposure of sensitive information and reducing the risk of skimming, fraud, and unauthorised replication of card details.” Meanwhile, Ahmad Firdaus explained that the limited-edition BIBD Eco Limited-Edition Platinum Debit Mastercard is crafted from 100 per cent FSC-certified maple wood instead of conventional plastic. The card is fully biodegradable and produced without petroleum-based plastics.

It serves as a tangible reflection of BIBD’s Sustainability Framework and its commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Brunei Vision 2035.

To mark the launch, BIBD will distribute the eco card through a dedicated customer campaign from August 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026. Customers who achieve a minimum cumulative spend of BND2,200 using their BIBD Debit Card(s) or BIBD QuickPay during the campaign period will be eligible to receive the exclusive eco card, while stocks last.

He said the BIBD Platinum Debit Mastercard and BIBD Flex Card will be available starting September 25, 2026. The BIBD Limited-Edition Eco Platinum Debit Mastercard is a campaign-exclusive card and will be available to eligible customers one month after the campaign concludes.

“New cardholders will automatically receive the refreshed design when they apply, and existing cardholders will receive it when their card is next due for renewal. There are no fees for new card applications, renewals due to expiry, or replacements for damaged cards. A replacement fee of BND15 only applies if a cardholder specifically chooses to replace an active/still-valid card with the refreshed design ahead of its renewal date,” he added.

Head of Retail Banking Group at BIBD Junaidi bin Bahrum highlighted that the cards can serve as ambassadors for Brunei. As BIBD’s customers use them while travelling abroad, the unique designs and artistic elements featured on each card offer a glimpse into Brunei’s culture and heritage, allowing them to carry a piece of the nation’s story wherever they go.

“Every card becomes an opportunity for customers to proudly carry and showcase our nation’s landmarks, acting as ambassadors for Brunei and contributing to greater visibility and interest as we look towards Visit Brunei 2027,” he added.

Eligible transactions include retail, online, contactless, overseas, and point-of-sale purchases. ATM withdrawals, standing instructions, and reversed or disputed transactions will not be counted towards the spending requirement.

Customers may register at any point during the campaign, with all eligible spending from August 1, 2026, counted retroactively.

As an additional reward, the first 100 customers to meet the spending requirement will also receive an exclusive BIBD Leather Card Holder and Wallet. Successful customers will be notified directly by BIBD with details regarding card collection and activation. Due to the limited quantity available, all rewards will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The refreshed debit card collection will be available from September 2026. New applicants will automatically receive the updated card designs, while existing customers will receive them during their regular card renewal cycle. The eco card will be distributed separately in accordance with the campaign’s terms and conditions.

BIBD hopes the collection will inspire customers to carry their cards with pride – whether making everyday purchases at home or representing Brunei while travelling abroad.
