Regional prosecutors tackle transnational crime

The 1st ASEAN Prosecutors/Attorneys General Meeting (APAGM) was hosted by the Attorney General’s Chambers of Brunei Darussalam yesterday with the inaugural meeting bringing together prosecutorial leaders and delegates from ASEAN member states to strengthen regional cooperation in prosecution and related matters.

The meeting welcomed initiative of the Senior Officials’ APAGM Work Plan 2026-2030, following discussions at a separate meeting chaired by Brunei Darussalam on October 19, 2026. The Work Plan will guide the implementation of APAGM’s priorities, focusing on strengthening prosecutorial cooperation, building institutional capacity, and promoting the sharing of information and best practices among ASEAN member states.

The meeting also emphasised the importance of close coordination with other ASEAN bodies to ensure complementary efforts in addressing transnational crime, particularly in light of rapid digitalisation and technological advancements. The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Joint Communiqué of the 1st APAGM, in which ASEAN Member States reaffirmed their commitment to closer coordination among its prosecutorial authorities to contribute to more timely and effective responses to transnational crimes.

Attorney General and Public Prosecutor Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Muhammed Taib chaired the meeting. It was attended by the Prosecutors General and Attorneys General of ASEAN member states, as well as the Secretary-General of ASEAN.

Established through the Sanur Bali Declaration, APAGM provides a dedicated platform for ASEAN prosecutorial authorities to strengthen cooperation in addressing transnational crime.
