Religious education must reflect in daily life

The impact of religious education should be reflected in daily life, whether at home, in the workplace, or within society, said Acting Assistant Director (Institutions of Learning) Department of Islamic Studies (JPI) Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) Haji Mohammad Ashanul Azmi bin Haji Sarbini. He said this during the 247th Special Munajat organised by the ministry in conjunction with the ‘Semarak Jubli Platinum 70 Tahun Pendidikan Ugama Formal’ celebration.

He also described religious education as a trust inherited from past rulers, religious scholars, teachers, administrators, and parents who had contributed to its development and established a lasting legacy.

“The true legacy of education is not merely buildings or systems, but individuals successfully shaped with strong faith, knowledge and character,” he said.

In facing the challenges confronting today’s generation, he stressed that religious education should not only ensure children know about religion, but also equip them with the strength to uphold and practice it.

“Therefore, the decisions we make, the knowledge we impart, the values we instil and the children we educate today can all have an impact on the future. That is the trust of building the next generation,” he said.

The 70-year legacy of formal religious education in Brunei Darussalam was highlighted during the gathering themed ‘Tujuh Dekad Pendidikan Ugama: Mensyukuri Nikmat, Meneruskan Amanah’ (Seven Decades of Religious Education: Grateful for the Blessing, Continuing the Trust).

Haji Mohammad Ashanul Azmi also said the 70th anniversary of formal religious education was an opportunity to be grateful for the blessings of religious education, which began with the establishment of religious schools on September 16, 1956.

He said the establishment of religious schools was aimed at developing individuals who are faithful, knowledgeable, practicing and of noble character.

The seven decades, he added, should not merely be remembered as history or a milestone, but should serve as an opportunity for self-reflection on whether religious education has brought people closer to Allah the Almighty, improved their worship and character, and shaped them into individuals who are trustworthy, honest and responsible.

“Religious education is not merely a process of imparting knowledge, but a process of shaping individuals through the study of Tauhid, Fiqh, Al-Quran, the Sirah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and moral education,” he said.

The Special Munajat saw the participation of officers and staff of the Department of Islamic Studies MoRA, including the Tutong, Belait, and Temburong Islamic Studies Offices, as well as mosques and suraus.

MoRA personnel and the public took part virtually.

The programme began with the recitation of Sayyidul Istighfar and Surah Al-Fatihah, led by Acting Assistant Director (Professional) JPI Pengiran Mohamad Aminuddin bin Pengiran Haji Hussin, participating from the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic School Surau.

This was followed by the congregational recitation of Surah Al-Mulk, led by Tutong Islamic Studies Office Education Officer Pengiran Haji Asri Sukaimi bin Pengiran Haji Piut.

The Doa Munajat was recited by Head of Examinations Division JPI Azman bin Haji Jaya followed by a prayer seeking rain amid the haze affecting the country recited by Acting Head of Religious Special Education Division JPI Haji Suherdey bin Serbini.

Following the religious talk, a Selawat Tafrijiyyah was led by Belait Islamic Studies Office Assistant Officer Pengiran Adiyura bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad.

The programme concluded with the Doa Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam, recited by Temburong Islamic Studies Officer Rozimin bin Haji Abd Rahim.

The Munajat Night programme aims to encourage the Muslim community to draw closer to Allah the Almighty through spiritual practices, seek forgiveness, recite and reflect upon the verses of Al-Quran, and collectively raise and affirm prayers with the hope that Brunei Darussalam, its people, and residents will remain protected from calamities and infectious diseases.

Members of the public are welcome to participate in the Munajat Night programme virtually.
