His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, on Wednesday attended the 14th Haflut Takharruj Ceremony of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB).
Accompanying His Royal Highness was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The ceremony at the Main Conference Hall of the International Convention Centre in Berakas saw 38 graduates receiving the Syahadah (certificates) for the Higher Diploma in ‘Aliyah Qira’at. The cohort comprised 19 male and 19 female graduates, with 28 achieving Mumtaz (Excellent) and 10 receiving Jayyid Jiddan (Very Good).
His Royal Highness also consented to deliver a sabda and officiate the presentation of the certificates.
The ceremony opened with the recitation of Al-Quran verses from Surah Al-Fath, verses one to seven, using Qira’at, Riwayat Warsh from Imam Nafi’. The recitation was delivered by graduate Muhamad Faiz Najwan bin Muhamad Saleh, who has participated in the National Musabaqah for Memorisation of the Al-Quran with Understanding, achieving several podium finishes between 2021 and 2026. A summary of the verses was delivered by fellow graduate Muhammad Nur Safwan bin Awang Asli.
In an address, graduate representative Muhammad Hassanul Jamsyir Ali bin Jais expressed gratitude to parents and guardians for their sacrifices, support and prayers throughout the graduates’ studies.
He also thanked lecturers and teachers for their dedication and guidance, particularly as the students formed the first intake of the upgraded Higher Diploma in ‘Aliyah Qira’at programme.
The ceremony also featured the Development and Achievement Exhibition of the ‘Aliyah Qira’at Diploma, which was viewed by His Royal Highness at the Muzakarah Hall.
The exhibition showcased the programme’s development, Sultan’s Scholar recipients, alumni achievements and graduates now serving in government agencies and uniformed services.
It also highlighted students’ participation in various life-skills programmes at the Youth Development Centre.
Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan said the 38 graduates represented the first cohort of the upgraded Diploma Tertinggi ‘Aliyah Qiraat Programme for the 2023-2026 academic session.
The upgraded programme has broadened the scope of study, including the introduction of Dhabt Al-Quran, which focuses on the signs, symbols and diacritical marks used in the Mushaf to help preserve the accuracy of Al-Quran recitation.
The minister said the Institute has produced 306 graduates since the first cohort of its Diploma ‘Aliyah Qiraat Programme received their certificates in 2013.
The Institute was established following the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with His Majesty’s 46th Birthday in 1992, and officially opened on January 1, 1993, with an initial intake of 45 students.
Today, ITQSHHB offers Al-Quran memorisation studies at diploma and secondary levels, as well as programmes for members of the public and individuals with special needs, including the visually impaired.
The minister urged graduates to regard Al-Quran memorisation as both a blessing and a lifelong responsibility by preserving their memorisation, practising the teachings of the Al-Quran and applying their knowledge for the benefit of society and the country.
