School leaders discuss student welfare

School leaders across Brunei Darussalam gathered for a dialogue session on student welfare, safety, and child protection, aimed at strengthening cooperation among schools and government agencies to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for children.

The dialogue brought together leaders from Arabic and religious schools nationwide, featuring briefings by three key agencies involved in child protection: the Community Development Department (JAPEM) under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports; the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF); and the Ministry of Health (MoH).

The event saw welcoming remarks from Acting Director of the Department of Islamic Studies (JPI) Hajah Mariana binti Haji Jamil.

The session featured presentations by Social Work Officer at JAPEM’s Family, Women and Children Division Syifa Syaheerah binti Abu Hanifah, Investigating Officer at the Women and Child Abuse Criminal Investigation Unit of the RBPF’s Criminal Investigation Department Inspector Maziah binti Mahusin, and Clinical Psychologist and Head of the Community Psychology Division at the MoH Alinah binti Haji Tamim.

The session organised by the JPI under the Ministry of Religious Affairs was held yesterday morning at Auditorium 1 of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School in Katok.

The dialogue was designed to enhance school leaders’ understanding of contemporary issues affecting children and adolescents, including risks relating to student safety and protection.

It also provided a collaborative platform to discuss proposed actions and more effective preventive strategies to ensure educational institutions remain safe and conducive environments that support children’s overall development. – Lyna Mohamad
