Mitchell Steel of Sabah Golf and Country Club scored 146 gross over 36 holes to emerge as the champion of the overall gross (36 holes) event of the 4th Senior Amateur Open Golf Championship 2026 at Pantai Mentiri Golf Club on Wednesday.

Second place went to Haji Mohd Suhaimi bin Haji Abd Karim of Pantai Mentiri Golf Club with a score of 148 gross (OCB) over 36 holes, and Dato Paduka Haji Abd Karim, also from Pantai Mentiri Golf Club, finished third with a score of 148 gross over 36 holes.

In an interview, Mitchell Steel shared, “This is the first time that I have managed to win first place at Pantai Mentiri Golf Club. I am very excited to have won because I have put in a lot of effort and practised in Sabah with the goal of securing the championship. It was just wonderful playing with the golfers here in Brunei.”

He added, “The golf course is fantastic here at Pantai Mentiri Golf Club. I first played here when the golf course opened in 1982, and it’s good to come back to play here again. Fortunately, the current haze situation doesn’t affect my game. I will definitely come back next year to defend my title.”

He also thanked the tournament director and Chairman of Pantai Mentiri Golf Club for successfully hosting the fantastic competition.

Chairman of Pantai Mentiri Golf Club Colonel (Rtd) Zahrin bin Haji Zunaidi, in his speech, extended his congratulations to all the outstanding senior players.

He said, “Over the past two days, we have witnessed these players demonstrate their skills, resilience, joy, disappointment and even frustration as they faced the challenges of the course, particularly on the greens. However, these emotions are secondary to what truly matters – the remarkable spirit of sportsmanship displayed by all players throughout the tournament.

By participating and competing in the tournament, he said, “you are not only vying for prizes and trophies, but also actively strengthening and deepening bonds of friendship and relations that span the entire island of Borneo and extend far beyond our borders. Golf brings us together in a unique way, and your participation has helped transform Pantai Mentiri Golf Club into a vibrant hub of regional friendship and camaraderie.”

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud, the guest of honour, presented the prizes to the winners.

He also presented certificates of appreciation to Chief Referee Elvina Wong Hee Hua from Kuching, Sarawak (Malaysian Golf Association), as well as Local Referee Haji Ibrahim Mahmud from Panaga Golf Club.
