Shared future best built together: His Majesty

The following is His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s message in conjunction with ASEAN Day 2026.

“Today, as we commemorate the 59th anniversary of ASEAN, we reflect on how far our region has come and the enduring belief that our shared future is best built together.

“For nearly six decades, this belief has brought the countries and peoples of Southeast Asia closer together, shaping ASEAN into a community of peace, stability and shared prosperity.

“This year’s commemoration is especially meaningful as we celebrate ASEAN Day for the first time with Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th Member State.

“We also mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), whose enduring principles continue to foster trust and peaceful cooperation across our region.

“As we celebrate these milestones, we are reminded of the strength of the ASEAN family. Over the past year, ASEAN has continued to address shared challenges and advance our common interests through close cooperation with our external partners. This enduring sense of solidarity will continue to guide our efforts to promote peace, security and prosperity in our region and beyond.

“Looking ahead, we must continue advancing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 by drawing strength from our diversity, remaining united, and building a more resilient, inclusive and people-centred community.

“Realising this vision will depend on the active participation of all our peoples, especially our youth, whom we must empower with the skills, opportunities and confidence to contribute to ASEAN’s future.

“In that spirit, and as reflected in the Philippines’ Chairship theme, ‘Navigating Our Future, Together’, Brunei Darussalam will continue to support efforts to strengthen ASEAN unity and Centrality, while deepening regional cooperation. I extend my warmest wishes to all the peoples of ASEAN on the 59th ASEAN Day, and to a future of continued unity, resilience and shared progress.”
