Small steps, big savings in energy conservation push

The functions and benefits of the Unified Smart Metering System (USMS) as well as common misconceptions around the system was addressed by USMS representative Mohd Nabil Fikri @ Abdul Hafiz bin Begawan Mudim Haji Suhaili during the second presentation of the FutureWatt Dialogue Session aimed to increase awareness around energy conservation and encourage sustainable habits to reduce electrical usage.

He noted that the system’s calibration is more accurate as compared to the older system and is paired with an innovative mobile application with various functions, including the capability to monitor electrical usage in different time periods – hourly, weekly, or monthly.

The dialogue session was moderated by Muhammad Aqil Arfan bin Arjune. The panellists addressed common beliefs within the community regarding electrical usage, and emphasised that energy conservation is an individual responsibility.

The event commenced with presentations from the Department of Energy, Upstream and Downstream (DoEUD) represented by Zulfadhli bin Abu Bakar and USMS representative Mohd Nabil Fikri.

The first presentation focused on the importance of saving energy taking into account the changes in the current climate, as well as introducing smart habits that can be practiced to reduce energy usage.

According to DoEUD, the main contributor of energy consumption in Brunei Darussalam is from air conditioning.

He also touched on how to utilise air conditioners optimally, such as switching both the air conditioner and fan on to circulate air around the room.

Director of Civil Service Institute (IPA) Dr Hajah Noor Maya binti Haji Md Salleh, the guest of honour, officiated the ceremony which began with a welcoming speech by WattSavers representative Dr Vivi Nabilah binti Shaya.

“The main message of this project is that changes do not have to start with drastic actions,” Dr Vivi Nabilah stated.

“Small but consistent actions can also lead to meaningful shifts, which brings us to FutureWatt’s slogan: Small Actions, Big Difference.”

As a contribution to the community, 20 solar flood lights sponsored by MegaWatt Solar Solutions and Syarikat Takaful Brunei Darussalam were gifted to the invited mukim penghulu and village heads, identified as FutureWatt Energy Champions.

“The champions will place the solar light where suitable in their community, such as recreational parks, mosques, and farms, or gift them to a family in need,” added Dr Vivi Nabilah.

The dialogue session is preceded by a mini showcase in Bandarku Ceria held on August 2, 2026.
