Spotlight falls on community engagement, sporting excellence

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) continues to demonstrate its commitment to employee well-being, community engagement and fostering a healthy and active lifestyle through its participation in several sporting tournaments, highlighted by a first runner-up finish at the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) 9-Side Veteran Football Tournament 2026 at the Tutong Sports Complex on Sunday in conjunction with International Recovery Day.

The football tournament brought together eight teams representing government agencies, institutions and community organisations in a shared celebration of sportsmanship, unity and the importance of supporting positive and healthy lifestyles.

Representing BIBD, the bank’s veteran football team delivered a strong performance throughout the one-day tournament, maintaining an unbeaten record during the group stage and semi-finals to secure a place in the final. Facing the Prisons Department in a closely contested match, BIBD held its opponents to a draw before narrowly losing 2-3 in a penalty shootout, finishing as first runner-up. The tournament featured teams from BIBD, NCB, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) – Tutong Police District, Prisons Department, Islamic Da’wah Centre – Tutong District, Tutong District Office, Al-Hijrah and Baitul Al-Hijrah.

The prizes were handed over by Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office and Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau Dato Paduka Haji Zailani bin Haji Ismail. Representing BIBD were President of the BIBD Sports and Recreation Club (SRC) Haji Minorhadi bin Haji Mirhassan and Vice President of BIBD SRC Haji Damit bin Haji Tahir.

Beyond the competitive achievement, BIBD’s participation carried a broader significance in supporting the objectives of International Recovery Day. The tournament provided a platform to promote awareness, encourage positive social engagement and reinforce the importance of collective support in building healthier, more resilient communities.

BIBD’s sporting achievements also extended to netball, with the BIBD Netball Club securing second runner-up at the Brunei Netball Association (BNA) Corporate Netball Tournament – Netball Kitani 2026 at the Indoor Stadium, Berakas on Sunday.

Competing against 12 corporate teams, BIBD’s netball players, representing divisions and departments across the bank, demonstrated strong teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The team received encouragement from Acting Deputy Managing Director of BIBD Hazimah ‘Izzati binti Pehin Dato Haji Adanan, who attended alongside fellow employees to show their support. Her presence reflected the bank’s emphasis on fostering an inclusive workplace culture where employees are encouraged to pursue their interests, celebrate collective achievements and support one another beyond their professional responsibilities.

Meanwhile, BIBD also participated in the Inter-Organisational Bowling Tournament on October 11, 2026 in Seria. The tournament brought together 20 teams from government ministries and government-linked companies.

BIBD’s participation provided an opportunity for employees to engage with counterparts from other organisations in a friendly and competitive environment, strengthening professional relationships, fostering camaraderie and promoting an active lifestyle.

Through its involvement in these sporting events, BIBD continues to encourage a workplace culture that values physical well-being, teamwork, resilience and meaningful engagement. The bank recognises that a healthy and motivated workforce is fundamental to organisational excellence, with the values developed through sports, including discipline, mutual respect, perseverance and collaboration, also contributing to stronger professional relationships and collective performance.

As a responsible Islamic financial institution guided by the principles of Maqasid Syariah, BIBD recognises that community well-being extends beyond financial security to encompass physical health, social inclusion and opportunities for individuals to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Supporting initiatives that encourage positive lifestyles, community solidarity and social reintegration reflects the bank’s wider commitment to creating meaningful and lasting social impact.

These efforts complement BIBD’s broader commitment to employee well-being and human capital development, recognising that investing in people extends beyond professional training and career progression to creating opportunities for personal growth, social connection and a balanced lifestyle.

The participation in inter-organisational sporting activities also strengthens BIBD’s relationships with government agencies, corporate partners and the wider community. Such engagements foster goodwill, mutual understanding and a shared sense of purpose, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in supporting Brunei Darussalam’s social development aspirations.
