The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre (ISC) and the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), together with the National Maritime Coordination Centre, concluded a four-day cluster meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan from September 21 to 24, 2026.
During the meeting, participants representing different stakeholders were briefed on various aspects of port and maritime security in Brunei, including early detection and response to maritime security threats, emerging technologies in maritime security operations, port security in the digital age, and enhancing offshore energy security through emerging technologies and maritime partnerships.
Participants also engaged in group discussions on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in counter-piracy and cross-border security operations, alongside current maritime security challenges, emerging regional threats and opportunities to further strengthen the ReCAAP framework.
“By using AI, the law enforcement agencies are able to address anomalies pertaining to suspicious vessels or unusual movements within their ports and territorial waters. I encourage ReCAAP Focal Points to explore the use of such technologies to detect suspicious vessels which may be involved in armed robbery against ships or other criminal activities,” said ReCAAP ISC Executive Director Vijay Chefekar.
Meanwhile, Acting Director of Operations, RBPF and ReCAAP ISC Governor for Brunei Assistant Commissioner of Police Haji Hamri Aslan said, “ReCAAP Focal Points in Southeast Asia face common security challenges such as armed robbery against ships, contraband smuggling, IUU fishing and irregular human migration. The cluster meeting has provided a useful platform for ReCAAP Focal Points to discuss best practices and coordinate responses to transnational maritime crimes.”
