Spotlight on laboratory accreditation expertise

Pusat Standard dan Akreditasi Brunei Darussalam (PSABD), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Civil Service Institute (IPA), conducted a PBD ISO/IEC 17025 Lead Assessor Training from October 20 to 22, 2026 at the IPA bringing together participants comprising PSABD officers and representatives from stakeholder agencies.

The course was held in conjunction with World Accreditation Day 2026 and serves as a capacity building initiative to develop the ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation Scheme, and in building the human capital required when the PBD ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation Services is launched in due course.

Celebrated annually on June 9, World Accreditation Day is a global initiative established by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) to promote the value-added benefits of accreditation services.

This year’s theme ‘Innovation, Trust and Sustainability: The Power of Accreditation’ reflects the vital role of accreditation in driving innovation, building trust in quality and international standards, and supporting sustainable development for a more competitive future.

According to PSABD, the course was facilitated by expert from Singapore, Chang Kwei Fern, who has experience and knowledge in conducting accreditation audits and assessments including ISO/IEC 17025 implementation, laboratory accreditation, and quality management systems.

Throughout the training, participants gained knowledge and practical understanding of the interpretation of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, assessment principles and techniques, assessment planning, management of assessment teams, collection of objective evidence, reporting of findings and follow-up activities.

The training represents an important step in developing local talent with the potential to be progressively trained as professional assessors in the field of laboratory accreditation.

Candidates identified and meet PSABD’s requirements will continue their competency development through practical training, supervised assessments, performance witnessing and PSABD’s authorisation process before being permitted to conduct assessments independently.

Through this approach, PSABD aims to establish a competent, ethical and sustainable pool of local assessors.

The availability of qualified local assessors is also important to support the effective and consistent delivery of national accreditation services in accordance with international requirements and practices.
