Members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) on Monday voiced strong support for the government’s move to strengthen cross-ministerial coordination, describing the appointment of three Coordinating Ministers as a strategic reform to accelerate the implementation of Wawasan Brunei 2035.
During deliberations at the first day of the Second Meeting of the 22nd Legislative Council Session on Monday, Yang Berhormat Awang Amran bin Haji Maidin, Yang Berhormat Hajah Rosmawatty binti Haji Abdul Mumin and Yang Berhormat Lau How Teck said closer coordination across ministries would improve policy implementation, enhance governance and deliver more tangible outcomes for the nation.
YB Amran said the appointments of the Coordinating Minister for National Security, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and the Coordinating Minister for Social and Human Resource Policies reflect His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s vision for a more integrated and responsive government.
Referring to His Majesty’s titah during the Cabinet reshuffle on June 4, he said Brunei Darussalam is entering a critical phase in implementing the Wawasan Brunei 2035 blueprints, where success depends on unity, collective responsibility and effective leadership across the Cabinet.
He described the appointments as more than an administrative restructuring, saying they are strategic reforms designed to strengthen policy coordination, accelerate government initiatives and ensure ministries work towards shared national priorities.
YB Hajah Rosmawatty said the Coordinating Ministers would play a key role in aligning government priorities, addressing cross-ministerial issues and strengthening collaboration while complementing—not replacing—the responsibilities of ministries and agencies.
She proposed that government efforts be centred on five key National Outcomes: economic growth, employment, poverty eradication, food security and energy security.
To support these priorities, she called for a National Outcomes Framework, faster project approvals and implementation, stronger job matching and placement initiatives, greater emphasis on quality and resilience, and the establishment of a National Wawasan Dashboard to track progress.
Meanwhile, YB Lau said stronger coordination is essential to ensure development policies translate into measurable results, particularly in driving economic growth.
He noted that challenges such as food security require cooperation across multiple sectors, including agriculture, research, technology, financing, logistics, food processing, marketing and exports.
He added that developing micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and attracting investment also require coordinated efforts among ministries, agencies and industry stakeholders.
The members agreed that with less than a decade remaining to achieve the targets of Wawasan Brunei 2035, stronger coordination across government is crucial to ensuring national policies are implemented effectively and deliver meaningful benefits for the people and the country.
