Schools across Brunei are increasingly equipping students with practical life skills to face emergencies and challenges beyond the classroom, the Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md Salleh said during the ongoing Second Meeting of the 22nd Legislative Council (LegCo) session on Monday.
The minister was responding to a question from Yang Berhormat Awang Zainol bin Haji Mohamed on whether the ministry had considered strengthening the school curriculum through more practical and continuous life-skills modules.
She said the Ministry of Education continued to focus on developing life skills alongside academic achievement.
Elements of safety, health, risk management and preparedness have been incorporated across the curriculum through subjects including Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB, Islamic Religious Knowledge, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Malay Language, English Language and Arabic Language.
Students are taught about safety at home and school, cyber safety, compliance with rules and laws, and their responsibilities as members of society.
These lessons are reinforced through co-curricular activities conducted with relevant agencies, providing students with exposure to first aid and fire safety skills.
Several uniformed groups have also been established in schools, including Scouts, Girl Guides, the Red Crescent, Fire and Rescue Cadets, Police Cadets and Military Cadets.
Six government secondary schools currently have Fire and Rescue Cadet teams, while another 12 have Red Crescent teams. The initiative is intended to equip students to act as first responders during emergencies at school.
Activities conducted between 2024 and 2025 included training in the use of basic equipment, first aid, firefighting skills competitions and workshops on the Red Crescent syllabus.
