Students raise awareness of sports-related dental injuries

Five third-year dentistry students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam brought sports and oral health education together through The Knocked Cup, a community engagement event aimed at raising awareness of sports-related dental trauma and promoting safer sporting practices.

Featuring a 3×3 basketball tournament involving eight teams, interactive dental awareness booths, educational briefing on sports-related dental trauma, introductory sports classes and vendor booths, the event provided a platform for the community to participate in sports while gaining practical knowledge about sports-related dental trauma prevention and its appropriate management.

The participants were introduced to different types of sports-related dental trauma, their associated risk factors, preventive measures and appropriate immediate management of sports dental trauma.

Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of wearing suitable mouthguards during sports that carry a risk of dental injury.

Participants also learned about managing sports dental trauma, including the correct handling and storage of a knocked-out adult tooth and the importance of seeking immediate dental care.

By focusing on practical prevention and emergency management, the educational activities sought to equip participants with knowledge that could help minimise the consequences of sports-related dental trauma.

The event was organised by KnockedOut!, a team comprising Chan Zhi Yen, Ilyliya Tahrina, Shane Soon Kae Xuan, Farzana Kasim and Chua Jun Ye.
