Brunei Darussalam's reaffirms its position and policy of maintaining friendly relations with all countries in an effort to preserve the peace and security of the region. This was underlined by the Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister's Office at the 6th Sub-Regional Meeting on Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (SRM) held at Sydney, Australia.
Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, who led the country's delegation, also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in the SRM to address the issue of terrorism and violent extremism in the region. In relation to this, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand will take up the Co-Chairmanship of the Senior Officials' Counter-Terrorism Policy Forum under the SRM this year.
Also shared at the meeting was Brunei Darussalam's efforts in combatting transnational crime in the region with the support of other countries. Recently, the Narcotics Control Bureau was involved in a multilateral operation to bring down an international drug smuggling ring. The operation was a testament to the commitment shown by relevant agencies especially the Narcotics Control Bureau in safeguarding the people from the threat of illicit drugs, in line with the 'Zero-Tolerance Approach.'
Earlier, the delegation held a Bilateral Meeting with His Excellency Tony Burke, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister for Cyber Security, Minister for the Arts and Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Australia. During the Bilateral Meeting, both countries expressed satisfaction over the long-standing ties and cooperation in many fields including in the field of security. Brunei Darussalam and Australia also discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in issues of mutual importance for both countries including border security and maritime security. Also joining the delegation was Awang Zulhusam bin Haji Abdul Samad, Acting Permanent Secretary for Security and Law, Prime Minister's Office.
