Sukan Ria strengthens ties among schools

The Brunei Malay Teachers Association (PGGMB) held its annual Sukan Ria, bringing together students, teachers and families from across the four PGGMB schools at the Arena Seria Field yesterday.

The annual event was organised among schools under PGGMB, namely Sekolah Tunas Jaya (STJ) PGGMB Kuala Belait who led this year’s events, alongside STJ PGGMB Lambak, STJ PGGMB Madang and Sekolah PGGMB Sungai Akar.

The programme began with a march-past by students, followed by the national anthem, the school song and a welcoming address by STJ PGGMB Kuala Belait Head Teacher Fazziah binti Haji Kamis, who also served as chairperson of the annual Sukan Ria. In her welcoming remarks, Fazziah said the annual Sukan Ria serves several important purposes, including strengthening ties and cooperation among the four PGGMB schools. She said the event also aims to build students’ confidence and perseverance, while providing them with opportunities to showcase their talents and potential in sports.

In addition, the sporting event seeks to instil positive values among students, including teamwork, diligence, responsibility and mutual respect between students and teachers.

She also highlighted the importance of giving students opportunities to gain experience and further develop their potential through sporting activities, while allowing teachers to contribute ideas and creativity through the activities organised during the Sukan Ria.

Following her opening remarks, the event was officiated by Acting Belait District Officer Muhammad Faiq bin Haji Rani, the guest of honour, followed by an aerobics session and the start of the sporting activities. This included competitions held for pupils from Kindergarten 1 to Kindergarten 3 and Year 1 to Year 6, spanning nine main sporting activities.

Fun sporting activities were organised for guests and parents, providing an opportunity for the wider school community to take part in the event. Prizes and medals were also handed out to winners by the guest of honour, PGGMB President Haji Mustapa bin Haji Masri, Head Teacher of STJ PGGMB Kuala Belait and members of the PGGMB committee. In addition to the sporting events, beginning this year, the school accumulating the highest overall points received a challenger’s trophy donated by PGGMB President Haji Mustapa which went to STJ PGGMB Sungai Akar.

The annual Sukan Ria received an encouraging response from all four participating PGGMB schools, with students demonstrating strong sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout the event.

The association expressed hope that activities such as the annual Sukan Ria would contribute towards developing students who are healthy, well-rounded and equipped to become a competitive generation in the future.
