His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Chancellor of Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), on Thursday conferred degrees and diplomas on 248 graduates at the university college’s 16th Convocation Ceremony.
The ceremony was held at the Chancellor Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Of the graduates, three received PhDs in Religious Education in Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah Studies, Islamic Education and Syariah, while 10 were awarded master’s degrees in Religious Education in Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah Studies, Islamic Education, Syariah and Usuluddin.
Two graduates received postgraduate diplomas, while 14 were awarded Postgraduate Diplomas in Religious Education in Arabic Language and 25 in Islamic Education.
Three graduates received bachelor’s degrees in Religious Education in Arabic Language Education, while 69 were awarded bachelor’s degrees in Islamic Education with minors in various fields, including Guidance and Counselling, Fiqh Ahwal Syakhshiah, Innovation and Technology in Islamic Education, Islamic Finance, Early Childhood Education, Islamic Family Education, Special Education and Malay Islamic Monarchy Education.
A further seven graduates received Higher Diplomas in Religious Education in Arabic Language Education, while 115 were awarded Higher Diplomas in Religious Education in Islamic Education.
His Majesty’s arrival was greeted by Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan along with KUPUSB Ra’es Dr Awang Haji Arman bin Haji Asmad and KUPUSB Registrar Pengiran Zainathul Shema binti Pengiran Haji Metassan.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, followed by the mass recitation of Zikir Al-Asma’ Al-Husna.
The procession accompanying His Majesty was preceded by the ceremonial carrying of the Mushaf Al-Quran into the hall by KUPU SB Mushaf writer Awang Mohd Adi Yusnira bin Haji Johari.
This was followed by the national anthem and a mass recitation of verses 1 to 13 of Surah Ar-Rahman by the graduates.
The summary of the Quranic verses was delivered by Awang Hilman bin Haji Salim, a Doctor of Religious Education graduate in Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah Studies, while the Hadith reading was delivered by Awang Muhd Syafiq bin Haji Abu Bakar, a Bachelor of Religious Education graduate in Islamic Education with a minor in Guidance and Counselling.
His Majesty also viewed an exhibition highlighting KUPU SB’s achievements and strategic initiatives in Islamic education, knowledge development, innovation and leadership.
KUPU SB aims to develop holistic human capital to meet the country’s needs by strengthening research and innovation, expanding collaboration and enhancing academic excellence, while producing graduates with knowledge and noble character who can contribute to religion, society and the nation.
