Sultan urges KUPU SB to lead ethical use of AI in Islamic education

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, has called on Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) to take a leading role in the ethical application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, guided by Islamic principles and values.

In a titah at KUPU SB’s 16th Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, His Majesty said AI was among the century’s most widely adopted technologies, bringing significant changes to education and society.

As a leading institution for religious teacher education, KUPU SB must go beyond using technology to lead in pedagogical approaches and the ethical use of AI, grounded in syarak, Islamic values and scholarly etiquette based on Al-Quran and As-Sunnah.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of preserving and developing the study of Kitab Turath and Jawi script through KUPU SB’s curriculum, ensuring that advances in education and technology remained rooted in Islamic scholarly heritage and traditions.

The integration of digital technology and AI into Islamic education should be balanced with mastery of both ilmu Turath and contemporary knowledge, His Majesty said, to improve teaching and learning without compromising syariah principles and scholarly etiquette.

Such an approach would also help strengthen the resilience of future educators in addressing ideas and ideologies that contradict the true teachings of Islam.

His Majesty welcomed KUPU SB’s efforts to strengthen its curriculum in line with current needs, saying this would improve graduates’ employability and enable them to contribute meaningfully to educational institutions, society and the nation.

The monarch also called for continued strategic collaboration with partners to develop a comprehensive education ecosystem and ensure programmes remained relevant. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) initiatives should further enhance alumni capabilities in response to changing needs and support the development of skilled and competitive human capital.

His Majesty also welcomed the establishment of the KUPU SB Training and Competency Enhancement Centre to expand upskilling and reskilling opportunities for graduates and alumni.

The centre is expected to promote lifelong learning, broaden knowledge and strengthen professional competencies, while helping produce graduates who uphold syarak principles, meet current workforce needs and gain recognised accredited skills certifications.
