Talk raises awareness on dementia

Standard Chartered Bank Brunei recently hosted a Dementia Awareness Talk in collaboration with PINGAT (Preserving Identity in Neurodegenerative Geriatric Ageing and Thinking Disorders), a community initiative from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Organised by Corporate Real Estate & Services (CRES) and Standard Chartered Bank Recreational Club (SCBRC), the event forms part of the bank’s Diversity & Inclusion (Ability) agenda and aims to raise awareness of dementia, a condition that affects millions of individuals and families worldwide.

The session featured a talk by Executive Committee Member of Demensia Brunei Dr Hajah Asmah binti Haji Husaini, who shared practical insights on understanding dementia, recognising its early signs and symptoms, addressing common misconceptions, identifying risk factors, and supporting individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

Employees also had the opportunity to participate in complimentary health screenings, including blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI) checks, while engaging with representatives from PINGAT through educational displays and interactive discussions.

Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Brunei Pengiran Aki Ismasufian bin Pengiran Haji Ibrahim said, “At Standard Chartered, we are committed to creating a workplace where our colleagues feel supported in their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Through initiatives such as Unmind, our Mental Health First Aiders network, recreational activities and awareness programmes like the Dementia Awareness Talk, we continue to foster a culture of care, inclusion and well-being.

“By raising awareness and encouraging open conversations, we hope to empower our colleagues to make informed decisions about their health and support those around them.”

As part of its ongoing efforts to create a supportive and inclusive workplace, Standard Chartered Bank Brunei continues to strengthen its commitment to employee well-being through a holistic approach that supports the physical, mental and emotional health of its employees.

Recognising that well-being is fundamental to a thriving workforce, the bank provides employees with access to a range of resources and initiatives designed to promote healthy lifestyles, resilience and meaningful social connections.

These include Unmind, the bank’s employee well-being platform offering confidential coaching, counselling and well-being resources, as well as a network of trained Mental Health First Aiders who provide peer support and help foster open conversations around mental well-being. The SCBRC also plays an active role in promoting well-being through regular sports, fitness and social activities that encourage employees to stay active and connected.

Standard Chartered said they believe their people are their greatest strength. They are committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative and purpose-driven workplace where colleagues can grow, thrive and make a meaningful impact.

Through learning opportunities, well-being programmes and employee-led initiatives, they continue to build a culture that empowers individuals to be at their best for their clients, colleagues and communities.
