Tour guides undergo heritage training

The Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry recently hosted two training sessions involving 22 registered tour guides across several historic locations and primary landmarks in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The training sessions were based on the Bandar Seri Begawan Heritage Trail Guidebook, which highlights the development and transformation of Brunei Darussalam through history, alongside efforts to conserve the value and uniqueness of cultural heritage such as the Water Village, which dates back more than 600 years.

Among the landmarks are the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque reflecting modern Islamic architecture and serves as a prominent symbol of Islamic identity in Brunei Darussalam.

The exposure is intended to equip tour guides with sound knowledge to share with visitors, particularly in preparation for increasing tourism activities anticipated for Visit Brunei Year 2027.

The training aimed to strengthen guides’ knowledge of local history, culture, and notable facts concerning historical sites across the capital.

Through structured sharing and knowledge transfer, participants were able to deepen their understanding while learning systematic, engaging, and effective methods of delivering information to tourists, thereby enhancing their confidence and capacity to provide quality explanations.

Participant Mohammed Ali Asmae bin Haji Mohammed Nasir noted that the training offered valuable information and practical sharing sessions, stating that the programme was highly beneficial in reinforcing baseline knowledge of the capital’s heritage and landmarks.

He added that prior knowledge could be verified and understood with greater clarity, helping guides respond to questions from tourists more confidently and accurately, while expressing appreciation for the knowledge shared during the sessions.

The Tourism Development Department will continue efforts to enhance the expertise, skills, and professionalism of tour guides as part of preparations for Visit Brunei Year 2027.
