Thirty individuals, comprising 27 men and three women aged between 14 and 70, were detained by the Tutong Police District of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) yesterday for alleged involvement in illegal ‘Katam-Katam’ and ‘Paikaw’ gambling activities, during a raid on a residence in Kampong Batang Mitus, Tutong.
According to the RBPF, “of the total detained suspects, one suspect was a foreign national, while the remaining suspects were Bruneian citizens.”
The operation seized cash in various currencies amounting to an estimate of more than BND21,900, along with gambling equipment believed to have been used in the illegal activities.
The operation, involving 46 officers and personnel from RBPF in collaboration with the Royal Customs and Excise Department (RCED), saw the RCED confiscate several contraband, including 178 cigarettes of various brands, one bottle of alcoholic beverage, and three vape devices.
All suspects were instructed to report to the Tutong Police Station and the Investigation Unit of the Enforcement and Law Division of the RCED in Kuala Belait to assist with the investigations and further action. The case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act (Chapter 28).
The RBPF advised the public to refrain from engaging in any form of gambling or other unlawful activities. The police will continue to intensify enforcement operations and take firm action against individuals found violating the law in order to safeguard public safety, maintain peace and order, and uphold the well-being of the community. – JAMES KON
