Tutong records moderate air quality as haze persists

Air quality in Tutong was recorded at a moderate level on Saturday morning, while the other three districts reported good air quality, according to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).

At 9am, Tutong recorded a Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading of 52. Brunei-Muara recorded 24, Belait 35 and Temburong 12.

JASTRe, under the Ministry of Development, said air quality reporting was enhanced from September 1 by incorporating PM2.5 concentrations into PSI readings.

PM2.5 refers to fine suspended particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres. The World Health Organization says the particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

The department will continue monitoring air quality nationwide and issue PSI updates five times daily during the hazy period, at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.

A PSI reading below 50 indicates good air quality, while readings between 51 and 100 are classified as moderate. Readings of 101 to 200 are unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and above 300 hazardous.
