Two Tutong families receive new homes

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD) continued its commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable families through Projek Teduh, with two more families in Kuala Ungar, Tutong District, benefiting from the bank’s community housing initiative aimed at providing safer, more secure and dignified living conditions. The latest beneficiaries, Awang Bohhari bin Awang Suboh and Awang Hirulsham bin Mohd Hanafi, were the 10th and 11th recipients under the initiative, marking another milestone in the programme’s efforts to address housing needs among underprivileged families and strengthen their long-term well-being and socioeconomic resilience.

For the two families in Kuala Ungar, the initiative represents an important step towards greater security and peace of mind, while providing a stronger foundation for their long-term well-being.

Coordinating Minister for Social and Manpower Policies and Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman in his capacity as Chairman of BIBD handed over the houses to the recipients.

Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BIBD Haji Mohammad Yusri bin Haji Wahsalfelah, alongside members of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council Syariah High Court Judge Haji Hassan bin Haji Metali; Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Dr Haji Awang Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Awang Ahmad; and Acting Secretary of MUIB Pengiran Ahmad Faris Ramadhani bin Pengiran Haji Sellahuddin were also present.

Also in attendance were permanent secretaries, members of the BIBD Shariah Advisory Body, as well as BIBD’s senior management and employees, alongside representatives of stakeholders and project partners, reflecting the collective commitment towards supporting the well-being of vulnerable families and strengthening community resilience. Funded through BIBD’s business zakat, Projek Teduh – launched late 2025 – reflects the bank’s commitment to translating the principles of Islamic finance into meaningful social impact. Guided by Maqasid Syariah, the initiative embodies the values of compassion, social responsibility and the preservation of human dignity, ensuring that the benefits of Islamic banking extend to communities that need support the most.

The initiative is also supported by a collaborative whole-of-nation approach, bringing together the efforts of government agencies, corporate organisations, BIBD employees and community partners. Through shared resources, expertise and collective responsibility, Projek Teduh demonstrates how meaningful collaboration can deliver practical solutions to community needs and create a lasting difference in people’s lives. – James Kon
