Two companies were slapped with compound fines by personnel of the Enforcement Section of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department for violation of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Chapter 30), Section 12(1).
The violations were discovered during a routine patrol and monitoring at the commercial areas of Batu Bersurat and Kampong Menglait.
A company in Kampong Menglait was issued a BND500 compound fine for committing the offence under the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Chapter 30), Section 12(1) (a) for the disposal or piling up of used commercial boxes in public areas behind the shop.
Meanwhile, another company was issued a BND1,000 compound fine for violation of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Chapter 30), Section 12(1)(e) for leaving behind electrical appliances, such as a used refrigerator and used washing machine bin behind the shop at Jalan Batu Bersurat.
The offenders were given seven days to pay the compound fine, after which the failure to pay may result in the company being prosecuted in court. Upon conviction, the offender may face a fine not less than BND2,000 and not exceeding BND10,000.
For a second or subsequent offences, the penalty increases to not less than BND10,000 and not exceeding BND30,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both.
The Enforcement Section reminded the public, business operators, and premises’ owners to maintain environmental cleanliness, particularly around business areas and public spaces, by refraining from dumping, piling, or leaving any form of waste in public areas.
