Two weighing machines seized for expired registration

Two weighing machines used for trading were seized after being found with expired registrations during a joint inspection in the capital in July.

The operation was conducted by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (JPES) through its Department of Consumer Affairs in collaboration with the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT).

SDT officers inspected seven weighing machines and found two belonging to a branch of a company to be in breach of the Weights and Measures Act, Chapter 151 and the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994.

The company was issued a Seizure Notice and both machines were confiscated. It must report to the SDT Unit within seven working days of the notice.

The machines may be returned for trading once their annual registrations have been renewed or new registrations completed.

Meanwhile, JPES found the inspected premises compliant with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142, with controlled items including cooking oil and formulated powdered milk sold within prescribed maximum prices. Prices were also clearly displayed.

The monthly joint operations aim to ensure businesses comply with price control and weights and measures requirements while promoting fair business practices and consumer confidence.

Businesses are reminded to ensure controlled items are not sold above prescribed maximum prices and that all trading weighing and measuring machines are registered with SDT.
