Unauthorised industrial storage in Tanah Jambu ceases operations

An unauthorised industrial storage operation carried out on five residential lots in Kampong Tanah Jambu, Mukim Mentiri, has ceased operations after being found to have breached planning regulations.

The Department of Town and Country Planning said the operation was conducted without Planning Permission, in violation of Section 23(2) of the Town and Country Planning Act, Chapter 248.

The five lots are located within a residential zone not designated for industrial activities. The operation, primarily involving industrial warehousing, had the potential to disrupt nearby residents through noise, frequent movement of goods and heavy vehicles, and extended operating hours.

The use of heavy vehicles for loading and unloading could also increase traffic and safety risks, while placing additional pressure on roads not designed for such use.

Following routine monitoring and inspection, the landowner complied with the Planning Authority’s directive to stop the activities, clean up the affected area and restore the lots for residential use.

The operation has since been relocated to a designated industrial area in line with the authorities’ advice.

The department reminded the public that industrial activities should be carried out only in designated areas planned and equipped to accommodate such operations while minimising disruption to surrounding communities.

Under Section 23 of the Act, no person may carry out development, subdivision or consolidation of land, or carry out work in a conservation area, without permission from the Planning Authority.

Those found guilty of an offence may face a fine of up to BND200,000 and, for a continuing offence, a further fine of up to BND10,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Members of the public seeking planning advice or wishing to lodge complaints can contact the Department of Town and Country Planning hotline at 8200 222.
