Virtual run raises dementia awareness

The closing ceremony of the Virtual Mind Over Miles Run, held in conjunction with World Dementia Month 2026, took place at the Riadah Hall of the Bandar Seri Begawan Youth Centre.

The event commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by welcoming remarks delivered jointly by Nur Razanah binti Haji Rosli from Y-LITE, Department of Youth and Sports, and President of Dementia Brunei Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim.

Other highlights of the ceremony included the presentation of certificates of appreciation to sponsors, an aerobics session, and an educational exhibition on dementia.

Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Hajah Noridah binti Abdul Hamid was the guest of honour.

The 30-kilometre virtual run was held from July 15 to August 30, enabling participants to run or walk at locations of their choice while recording their distances through tracking applications.

The programme attracted more than 150 participants from various segments of society, including children, youth, adults, and senior citizens, as well as caregivers and family members of individuals living with dementia.

Proceeds from participation fees and donations collected through donation boxes placed at several locations will be channelled to Dementia Brunei.

As a youth-led initiative, the programme provided members of the Y-LITE group with hands-on experience in leadership, programme management, teamwork, and communication.

Among the programme’s primary objectives was to raise public awareness about dementia and the importance of early detection, while encouraging an active lifestyle as a measure to help reduce dementia risk factors.

The programme was organised by the Y-LITE 2026 cohort (Youth – Leadership, Innovative, Talent and Empowerment) under the Department of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with Dementia Brunei and Belia Imtiyaz.

The initiative sought to strengthen support networks among the community, caregivers, and individuals living with dementia, while fostering greater understanding, empathy, and concern towards those affected by the condition.

It also contributes to the development of a more active, inclusive, caring, and compassionate community, in line with the aspirations of Brunei Vision 2035.
