Walkathon underscores food safety as shared responsibility

Some 380 participants, comprising Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA) staff and their families, representatives from government agencies, the Anggerek Desa Technology Park (ADTP) community, food business operators including restaurants, importers, exporters and micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as members of the private sector and the public came together yesterday morning to take part in the World Food Safety Day Community Walkathon 2026 at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas, Bandar Seri Begawan.

The activity, while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle also provided an opportunity for stakeholders from different sectors to come together, strengthening collaboration and reinforcing the message that food safety is a shared responsibility involving everyone, from food businesses and regulators to consumers and the wider community.

The event also saw a BDFA information booth, which provided an interactive platform for public engagement and education. Visitors had the opportunity to learn more about BDFA’s role as the national regulatory and competent authority responsible for ensuring that food in Brunei Darussalam is safe, clean and of good quality.

The booth also promoted good food hygiene and safe food handling practices, reinforcing key messages on preventing foodborne illnesses and highlighting the important role that individuals, food businesses and communities play in safeguarding food safety.

Chief Executive Officer of the BDFA Dr Hajah Anie Haryani binti Haji Abdul Rahman was the guest of honour.

Organised by the BDFA, the walkathon was held in conjunction with World Food Safety Day 2026, observed annually on June 7.

This year’s global theme, ‘From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere’, highlights the importance of understanding the burden of foodborne diseases and using reliable data and scientific evidence to guide effective, targeted and cost-efficient food safety actions. – James Kon
