Workshop opens new livelihood opportunities for participants

The competencies gained through the Malay massage workshop could provide participants with viable avenues to earn a livelihood, including establishing independent massage spas, offering home-based spa services, or securing employment at wellness and massage establishments across the country, event chairperson Latifah binti Abd Razak said.

She said this during a ceremony where 34 participants who completed the Level 2 and 3 Traditional Malay Massage Workshop, marking another step towards preserving Brunei’s traditional healing practices while equipping participants with skills that could open up livelihood opportunities, received their certificates.

Pengiran Datin Hajah Masrelawati @ Khadijah binti Pengiran Haji Md Said, the guest of honour, presented certificates to the participants during the ceremony at a hotel in Kiulap on Saturday.

Latifah binti Abd Razak said the ceremony represented more than the awarding of certificates, highlighting the collective effort, sacrifice, dedication, and commitment required to ensure Brunei’s traditional Malay massage continues to be recognised, learnt, and passed down to future generations. She noted that the certificates reflected the participants’ hard work, discipline, and dedication to acquiring knowledge and skills.

A competent massage practitioner, she added, should be evaluated not solely on technical ability, but also on character, attitude, personal hygiene, knowledge, and responsibility towards clients receiving treatment. Among those completing the latest programme was 17-year-old Arissa Insyirah binti Haji Irwan Nazmi, whose participation highlighted the potential for younger generations to adopt and sustain the traditional heritage practice to prevent it from fading over time. The ceremony also recognised the three best-performing participants across both theoretical and practical components, who were awarded souvenirs and cash prizes.

Tokens of appreciation and souvenirs were also presented by Hajah Mariam binti Napiah to the guest of honour, co-instructor Pengiran Jasrin bin Pengiran Haji Tuah, and workshop adviser Hajah Linda Aini binti Abdullah. – Lyna Mohamad
