In Brunei Darussalam, the number of diabetes cases are increasing. Meanwhile, complications related to diabetes such as kidney disease and stroke are also on the rise. The Minister of Health shared the matter in a message in conjunction with the World Diabetes Day 2025 celebration. The increase, according to Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, are a threat to public health that cannot be taken lightly.
Yang Berhormat stressed that 'Diabetes and the Workplace' is an aspect that lacks attention in discussions pertaining to diabetes, its impact on mental health and emotional well-being, especially at the workplace. Study shows that people with diabetes have a higher risk of experiencing depression and anxiety, treatment burden that exceeds their means, stigma as well as discrimination.
Inline with the Whole of Nation approach, the Ministry of Health urged all employers, whether in the public or private sectors, to be active partners in efforts to reduce the burden of diabetes. The Ministry of Health remains committed to strengthen the health services from the aspects of prevention, screenings, management, and diabetes treatment. The ministry will also continue to work closely with other stakeholders in the efforts to incorporate health in all policies.
The World Diabetes Day is celebrated every 14th of November with the goal of raising awareness on diabetes as a critical global public health issue. This year's theme was Diabetes and Well-being, with the focus on Diabetes and the Workplace.
