The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood (DAA), is promoting smart and innovative farming technologies to enhance agricultural productivity, improve efficiency and strengthen Brunei Darussalam’s food security.
The initiative also aims to encourage more young people to pursue careers in agriculture by highlighting the sector’s potential as a modern and sustainable business opportunity.
Farm Machinery Engineering Executive and Assistant Head of Policy Management and Finance at the DAA Awang Aziz Soffre bin Haji Ali Ahmad highlighted the efforts during the opening of the 12th Youth with the Potential to Pursue Careers in High-Tech Agriculture Programme on Monday.
The event was held at the Training and Post-Harvest Services Centre, Tungku Agricultural Development Area (KKP) Office in Kampung Tungku Gadong, and attended by senior officers from the department.
Awang Aziz Soffre said the programme supports the DAA’s Strategic Plan and the Agriculture and Agrifood Sector Roadmap and Targets 2022–2030, which aims to achieve a total crop industry output of BND148.29 million by 2030.
He said the adoption of advanced technologies is particularly important given Brunei’s limited agricultural land, as it can help increase crop and livestock production while improving overall farm management.
The programme seeks to showcase agriculture as a high-potential industry that offers business opportunities, higher productivity and a meaningful role in supporting national food security.
It consists of two main components. The first features briefing sessions on investment opportunities, hydroponic and fertigation farming systems, financial management and marketing strategies, conducted in collaboration with the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB).
The second component provides participants with practical industrial training at selected farms, including Hua Ho Agricultural Farm, Nana Agro Farm and Natural Healing Enterprise, where they gain exposure to modern farming practices and the application of agricultural technologies.
Awang Aziz Soffre expressed hope that the programme would nurture a new generation of committed and innovative youth agri-entrepreneurs who can contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector and increase its contribution to Brunei’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The event also featured a video presentation on the DAA’s mission, vision and business opportunities in the agriculture sector.
The 12th edition of the programme has attracted 24 participants comprising degree graduates, Higher National Diploma holders and GCE O Level graduates.
