A total of 80 youth aged between 15 and 35, comprising students from government secondary schools and higher education institutions, as well as members of youth and sports associations and organisations, gained a better understanding of the threat of online scams during a cybersecurity talk at the Youth Centre in the capital.
Organised by the Brunei-Muara District Youth and Sports Branch, the programme was one of the initiatives aimed at raising awareness and enhancing youths’ knowledge of the importance of cybersecurity, particularly in addressing the increasingly diverse forms of online scams.
The Cybersecurity Talk exposed participants to various types of scams, including the modus operandi used by unscrupulous individuals. Participants were also briefed on measures they can take to protect themselves, their personal information and financial accounts from falling victim to scams.
In addition, the programme aimed to guide participants in identifying techniques and tactics commonly used by scammers, including early warning signs that may indicate an offer, message or communication is fraudulent.
Participants were also provided with guidance on safe internet and social media practices, including the importance of keeping personal information confidential and exercising caution when dealing with or sharing information with unknown individuals.
To ensure participants receive information and insights from experts in the relevant fields, the Brunei-Muara District Youth and Sports Branch invited speakers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force and Brunei Darussalam Central Bank to deliver talks and share their knowledge and expertise.
The Department of Youth and Sports will continue to support efforts to raise awareness among youth on current issues relating to safety, well-being and the positive and responsible use of technology.
