Youth urged to lead with faith, character

Youth urged to lead with faith, character » Borneo Bulletin Online

Youth are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but also leaders of today, with faith, knowledge, good character and skills forming the foundation of effective leadership, highlighted Director of the Centre for Public Relations and International Affairs at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali and recipient of the 2022 Outstanding Youth Award Dr Mohammad Hilmy Baihaqy.

He highlighted this in the religious talk ‘Youth as Leaders, the Lifeblood of the Nation’s Vision’, during the 250th edition of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ (MoRA) Munajat Night programme on Saturday night, in conjunction with the 21st National Youth Day celebration this year.

Drawing lessons from Al-Quran, – the story of Ashabul Kahfi – Dr Mohammad Hilmy Baihaqy explained that the young believers were granted greater guidance by Allah the Almighty for their faith, strengthened in their hearts as they upheld their beliefs, and protected them away from falsehood.

He said the story illustrated the qualities of young leaders envisioned in Al-Quran, stressing that building the character and spiritual foundation of young people must come before developing their skills. “Technology without values can be misused, knowledge without good character can cause harm, and intelligence without faith can lose its direction,” he said.

However, when faith, knowledge, good character and skills come together, he added, they can produce a generation capable of leading.

The talk at Pengiran Muda Abdul Malik Mosque in Kampong Tungku/Katok was attended by members of the mosque’s committee, youth and congregants of Pengiran Muda Abdul Malik Mosque, Brunei Darussalam students in Cairo, Egypt, as well as participants from mosques and suraus.

MoRA personnel and members of the public also joined the programme virtually from their homes. The programme began with the recitation of Sayyidul Istighfar and Surah Al-Fatihah, led by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha, who also joined the broadcast from Pengiran Muda Abdul Malik Mosque.

This was followed by the communal recitation of Surah Al-Mulk, led by champion of the final round of the 1448 Hijrah National Youth Al-Quran Recitation Competition Mohammad Amirul Ariffin bin Haji Noraidi.

The Doa Munajat was recited by Chief Executive Officer of GenQu Company (Al-Huffaz Management) and HalalNowBN Haji Md Loqman Al Hakim bin Haji Hamdan, recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Youth Project Award and the 2020 Youth Leader Award.

A special prayer seeking rainfall amid the haze was recited by Mosque Affairs Officer at Pengiran Muda Abdul Malik Mosque Morni bin Haji Nayan.

Following the religious talk, the congregation recited Selawat Tafrijiyyah, led by mosque youth member Mohammad Shahmie bin Mohammad Sani.

The programme concluded with the recitation of the Doa Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam by Education Officer at the Ministry of Education and recipient of the 2023 Youth Leader Award Mohammad Arif bin Abdul Hadi.

The Munajat Night programme aims to encourage the Muslim community to strengthen their relationship with Allah the Almighty through spiritual practices, seek forgiveness, recite and reflect on the verses of Al-Quran, and join in collective prayers.

It also provides an opportunity for the community to pray for the continued protection of Brunei Darussalam and its people from calamities and infectious diseases. – Lyna Mohamad
